Two corrections have been found for this article following publication. The sentence ‘Particular examples included approval for both the use of an experimental Canadian vaccine and the introduction of famciclovir as postexposure prophylaxis for Ebola cases’ is incorrect and the drug used was favipiravir.

The article states that StC achieved ‘full operating capability by the middle of November 2014’. The correct date was December 2014.
