Stanisław Ostrowski, physician, soldier and statesman, led an extraordinary life that spanned from the end of the 19th century to the disintegration of the political order formed in Tehran and Yalta. A remarkable figure, he was a member of the Polish Parliament, municipal president of Lwów, People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs (NKVD) prisoner and president of the Polish Republic in exile.
Military medical career
Stanisław Ostrowski was born on 29 October 1892 in a majestic city called Lemberg in German, as it was then part of the Austro–Hungarian Empire, but returned to the Republic of Poland as Lwów, and today is part of Ukraine as Lviv.1 2 In 1912, he enrolled at the thriving Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lwów. A Polish patriot like his father, he became a member of a pivotal Polish secret military organisation founded by the legendary future Marshal of Poland Józef Piłsudski and others. During World War I, he joined the first Brigade of the Polish Legions, commanded by Piłsudski, and took part in consequential battles.
In November 1918, Ostrowski took part in the Defense of Lwów. He was active in helping the wounded, including in a makeshift hospital at the Lwów Polytechnic. In June 1919, he obtained the degree of doctor of …
