A combat medical technician’s (CMTs) skillset is broad, including basic soldiering, primary healthcare (PHC) and trauma management. Their initial medical training is brief when compared with registered healthcare workers, focusing on essential medical knowledge and the clinical skills required for deployment. Therefore, the development of their medical skills is largely experiential, for example, through clinical work in placements and supervised experience on military exercises.

This experience, while invaluable, is limited in scope and quantity. If supervision is insufficient patient safety may be compromised. Simulated patient scenarios offer an opportunity for clinical development across the whole of the CMT scope of practice while reducing risks to patient safety.
